A week-long campaign targeting distracted, impaired and aggressive driving and those not wearing seatbelts resulted in hundreds of offences in the London area.

London police issued 561 tickets and seven people were charged with impaired driving after police held nine RIDE checks and tested 1,750 drivers for sobriety.

Of the tickets issued, 102 were for distracted driving, 344 for aggressive driving and 115 for failing to wear a seatbelt.

Middlesex County OPP say during their campaign they responded to over 420 calls and issued 188 citations.

The tickets/charges included:

  • 148 for speeding
  • 10 for driving while impaired by alcohol
  • 10 seatbelt-related offences
  • nine for distracted driving
  • three for stunt driving
  • six for failing to yield or careless driving
  • two for driving while impaired by drugs

St. Thomas police say they issued 32 tickets for distracted driving, 15 for seatbelt infractions, 36 speeding tickets and 10 for stop sign violations, not turning in safely and following too closely.

Two people were also charged with impaired driving after failing roadside breathalyzer tests.

Canada Road Safety Week, which ran from May 13 to May 20 involved the participation of police forces across the country.

Officials are reminding the public of the importance of using safe driving habits while on the road.
