Despite advice from police to make plans for a safe ride home this long weekend, London emergency personnel were dealing with alleged impaired driving incidents Saturday and Sunday.
Police say two crashes involved the same motorist.
Just after 10:30 p.m. Saturday, there was a crash on White Oak Road and Dingman Drive and police say the driver left the scene. Shortly after, police say the same driver was involved in a crash at Wonderland Road and Dingman Drive.
Only minor injuries resulted in both collisions.
A man was arrested and charged with two counts of impaired operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm, fail to stop at the scene of an accident, two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and assault. Police say the assault was in regards to an incident at the hospital.
Officers also charged another driver, saying that person’s blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit. That driver was pulled over on Highbury Avenue overnight.
While the London MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) president says more awareness continues to be needed about the dangers of impaired driving, she is also remembering her four-month-old son Alex, who was killed by a drunk driver on Thanksgiving weekend eight years ago.
“I sustained a broken back and 11 hours after the collision, my youngest son Alex was killed,” said Mary Rodrigues.
Sunday also marks one year since the death of Western University student, Andrea Christidis, also struck and killed by a drunk driver on campus.
Rodrigues said Andrea’s family continues to mourn and is marking a year since her death.
