St. Thomas police have charged two people in connection with a fight that left two others injured early Monday morning.

Officers were called to the St. Thomas Sportsman Club around 2 a.m. for reports of a large crowd and a disturbance.

Police found two people had been sprayed with bear spray and defended themselves against a 1 1/8" pipe wrench. Both suffered minor injuries.

Investigators say the confrontation stemmed from a separate incident earlier in the year, had been building on Facebook and a meeting was ultimately been arranged.

A 19-year-old Southwold man has been charged with four counts of assault with a weapon, possession of a prohibited device and possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose. He was held pending a bail hearing.

A 20-year-old St. Thomas woman has been charged with possession of a prohibited device and possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose. She was later released with conditions.

Police are reminding people that while bear spray is allowed in Canada, it is only to be used on animals to protect oneself, and use on people will result in criminal charges.
