A 23-year-old man charged with impaired driving causing death in connection with a fatal crash last week was granted bail Wednesday afternoon, but his release was short-lived.

Jinghao Zhou was charged after his SUV slammed into a car being driven by Gloria Chivers, 60, killing her instantly on Nov. 24 in a head-on crash at Sunningdale Road and Richmond Street in London.

Zhou is a Chinese citizen here initially on a student visa.

His lawyer, Jim Dean, says Zhou currently has a work visa.

Bail was granted on a number conditions, including the surrender of his passport.

But it all became moot after the court learned that Canadian Immigration and Citizenship officials planned to take Zhou into custody shortly after his release.

The grounds for Zhou being taken into custody weren't immediately identified.
