Saint John officer won’t be charged in connection with pedestrian collision: SIRT

The Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) says a member of the Saint John Police Force won’t be charged in connection with a pedestrian collision back in January.

The police watchdog says an officer was on patrol on City Road when they hit a male pedestrian around 2 a.m. on Jan. 19.

The man was reportedly wearing dark clothes and was not in a marked crosswalk.

SIRT says a truck also had to swerve to avoid hitting him moments earlier.

The man was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, internal injuries, and significant fractures of his right elbow, humerus, femur, and knee.

SIRT says the man was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.

Director Erin Nauss said she cannot conclude that the officer was operating the police vehicle in a dangerous manner and no charges will be laid.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
