St. Thomas police say a man is in custody following a robbery at B & L Jewellers on Monday afternoon.

Officers were called to the store shortly before 3 p.m. for reports of a robbery in progress.

Police say a man entered the store and had a short conversation with the employee before punching her in the face, jumping the counter and continuing to assault her, then binding her legs, arms and mouth using zip ties and duct tape.

At that point, investigators say a customer entered. She was also assaulted and forced into a back room, but managed to escape and call for help.

The accused then allegedly grabbed cases of jewellery and left out the rear door leaving a trail behind him.

Police were able to identify the suspect through video surveillance and he was arrested in London around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

A 40-year-old London man is now facing charges of robbery, assault, assault causing bodily harm, forcible confinement and breach of recognizance.

He is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
