A guilty plea has been entered in case of mistaken identity that ended in tragedy on May 31, 2012.
Jared McKnight was only 19 years old when he was stabbed to death near his home over a BB gun incident that he wasn't even a part of.
On Tuesday, 25-year-old Perry Eggett Jr. pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death.
Eggett reportedly stabbed Jared in the chest over an incident that actually involved his brother, then 16-year-old Jordan McKnight.
The court heard a fight between a woman and Jordan ended with her having a BB fired at her butt, and Eggett was retaliating.
Megan Dennahower told police she heard Jared say, "You've got the wrong brother, you've got the wrong brother,' as Eggett grabbed him by the shirt outside an Adelaide St. home.
Dennahower also told police Eggett said 'This is for my cousin,' as he stabbed Jared in the chest.
Jared collapsed on his front lawn a few houses down and died a few hours later.
The court heard that on the day of the murder Eggett had been drinking heavily.
While he told police he stabbed Jared in self defence, witnesses say Eggett called Jared to the porch, and pulled the knife from his pocket.
He was originally charged with second degree murder and that trial was to begin in April.
Peter Wall, a former acquaintance of Eggett told police, "He was proud of himself because he had made it to the news...it's like he was proud," the court heard.
Eggett had a large entourage in the courtroom as he pleaded to the lesser charge of manslaughter.
Jared's mother, who lives in Winnipeg, has said on social media she is disappointed with the reduced charge.
On Facebook Lori Scott wrote, "What little faith I have held on to for the last 971 days, or 2 years, 7 months and 26 days in the Canadian justice system has pretty much gone out the window."
Eggett was on probation when the stabbing occurred and been in custody since his arrest.
The sentence for manslaughter can range from probation to life in prison.
Sentencing will be scheduled next month.
