Some, however, argue the curse began after the team's last Stanley Cup championship in 1967, when former Leafs player Larry Hillman claimed to have put a hex on the franchise after he was fined $2,400 for a contract holdout. Upon leaving the team, Hillman said the Leafs would never win another cup until he was paid back the money with interest. And although Hillman chose to lift the curse in 2017 and was repaid the $2,400 plus interest by Leafs president Brendan Shanahan, the curse still seems to have a hold on the franchise.

One thing remains true; it has been close to 60 years of bad luck for Leafs with no end in sight.

Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews (34) celebrates a goal in Toronto, Thursday, April 11, 2024.
