Many people in the London area woke up to something they hoped they wouldn't see again soon - a blanket of snow.

Environment Canada's special weather statement for the region has ended, but Old Man Winter took one last swing at southwestern Ontario.

Forecasters say a sharp arctic cold front moved into the region following the weekend's summer-like weather, causing temperatures to plummet to well below normal Monday night and into Tuesday.

Temperatures are expected to remain below zero in the London area with a low of -8 C possible Tuesday night. That would break a record of -6.7 C set back in the 1940s.

Flurries continued through the afternoon across the region and most areas are expected to receive just a few centimetres of snow before it's all over.

Still, the weather made for some slipperty driving conditions, with Perth County OPP reporting nine collisions in a four-and-a-half hour period starting around 6:30 a.m. Fortunately only minor injuries were reported.

Take heart though, temperatures are expected to return to the positive side on Wednesday with mainly sunny skies.
