A campaign calling for governments to get on board with new transportation strategies rolled into London on Saturday.

The "Where's the Bus?" campaign is headed up by Coach Canada.

It runs the Megabus commuter buses out of Toronto.

Pacific Western in Alberta is also part of the initiative.

Both organizations are calling for an end to 60 year old provincial regulations which they say limit competition.

"The current system only allows on licensed operator on specific routes. Basically what it does, the regulations create a monopoly for the provider of service in that corridor," says Dean Wright of Pacific Western.

Usually when you think of bus travel you think of one name but these companies believe there's room in the field for more players to accommodate gaps in service.

"If we look in the last five or six years in Ontario, I think the numbers about 60 communities, smaller communities that have lost their bus service," say Wright.

The campaign also comes as the Southwest Economic Alliance increases its call for more inter-community transit opportunities as an economic development tool and as way to counter reductions in VIA Rail service to smaller towns and cities.

Megabus vice president John Crowley says new technology has allowed buses to be a comfortable, cost effective and environmentally friendly way to travel.

"We're finding were taking people out of their vehicles, reducing congestion contributing to greenhouse gasses and providing people with safe economical travel," says Crowley.
