The National Hockey League Players' Association is making a challenge gift of $500,000 support concussion research at Western University in London, Ont.

The gift kicks off a one-year challenge to Canadians to raise the rest of the more than $3.1 million needed for work to help better diagnose and treat those suffering from the debilitating injury.

The university's team of researchers will be led by associate professor and scientist Arthur Brown.

Experts say more than 160,000 Canadians suffer concussions every year and half of all cases are sports-related.
