Canadian golfing great Mike Weir has been awarded the London Golf Heart Award for his work raising funds for hospitals through his own foundation.

Weir, a Sarnia native, accepted the honour via Skype on Tuesday.

“As a professional golfer, we're kind of not indoctrinated, but we just feel lucky to be in a position where we're able to give back. So this award means a great deal to me,” said Weir, a Masters champion.

His parents, Rich and Rowie Weir, along with brother Jim, were at Greenhills Golf Club for the presentation.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation is the charity of choice for LondonOntarioGolf.Com.

The heart award was created to recognize local golfers and organizers who have contributed to their community.

The Mike Weir Foundation has raised more than $7 million for children’s health care and related causes.
