The OPP Search and Recovery team is on scene near Aylmer after a 57-year-old man drove over a cliff into Lake Erie Friday.
Police were watching for a suspicious vehicle on Springfield Road around 4:45 p.m.
As it approached, something was thrown from the car.
The officer stopped to recover the item.
When he resumed his patrol the officer was contacted by a civilian who reported the car had driven over the cliff at the end of Springfield Road and into the lake.
Police located the submerged vehicle and will attempt a recovery Saturday.
The province's Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate and has taken over the case.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 ext. 1935.
