It’s no easy task, winning the battle of the beetle.  Japanese beetles have made their way back into the Forest City, damaging flowers, plants and trees.

Experts believe the bright green and brown invaders were likely brought in with imported soil or ornamental plants years ago.

Agriculture Canada’s Ian Scott says both this year and last saw more of the unwelcome guests than usual.

And while they don’t bite, the beetles can really get under the skin of those who love their ornamental gardens. And getting rid of them is no easy task.

Jim Stinson from Canadale Nursery in St. Thomas says the problem with Japanese beetles is that they fly around, “You can spray the beetle and it might kill one, but tomorrow a whole bunch more will fly back in.”

There are traps that can be used, but Stinson says your most effective option may be to actually hand-pick the pests off of your plants and drop them into a soapy bucket.
