Plans by the City of St. Thomas to demolish the former Sutherland Press building on Talbot Street have hit another snag.
On Monday, the city received a court decision stating Sutherland Loft Inc. did not receive notice of a building order and its president was unaware specifically that the building might be demolished, if not remediated by the owner.
In a news release, city officials say they will not be able to undertaken any work to remove the unsafe structural conditions of the building at 606 Talbot St.
Instead, the city will close a section of Moore Street temporarily from Talbot Street southward to the Moore Street parking lot.
While Talbot Street in front of the building will remain open, the sidewalk will be closed as additional safety precautions are addressed in this area, the city says.
Work to initiate these closures will begin on Wednesday.
Additionally, the transit building will be closed because of its proximity to the east wall of 606 Talbot St.
Day to day operations of the transit building will be temporarily moved to South Edgeware Road at the Community Recycling Centre.
Residents will be able to purchase bus tickets at 545 Talbot St.
City officials say they will be reviewing the court’s decision with its solicitor to determine the next steps.
