Mosquitoes in southeast London and Perth County have tested positive for the West Nile virus.

Tests taken from a trap located in the Pond Mills neighbourhood of London and the southeast part of Listowel came back positive.

Both the Middlesex-London Health Unit and the Perth District Health Unit have been trapping and testing mosquitoes this summer.

There are no human cases of West Nile virus in London, Perth County or Ontario for that matter.

There are several steps residents can take to ensure their safety from West Nile and infected mosquitoes.

• Removing standing water around the home at least once a week to reduce mosquito breeding grounds.

• Using insect repellent when outdoors; a repellent with DEET or Icaridin offers the most effective protection.

• Covering up with light-coloured clothes, long sleeves and pants when outdoors or while in areas where mosquito activity is high.

• Taking extra protection measures at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
