Plank Road Auto Wreckers Ltd. has been fined $60,000 after a worker was fatally injured on the job nearly two years ago.

An employee at the company's Sarnia facility was preparing a car to be scrapped and had propped up the front of the vehicle on a fuel tank.

While working underneath the vehicle to drain its fuilds, the car slid off the fuel tank, leaving the worker with injuries that eventually caused death.

Plank Road Auto Wreckers pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that machinery, equipment or material that was temporarily elevated and under which a worker worked was securely and solidly blocked to prevent the machinery, equipment or material from falling or moving as per the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

In a Sarnia court on Tuesday, Justice of the Peace Anna Hampson imposed the fine, and a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge was added as required by the Provincial Offences Act.
