The Ontario Conservation Officers Association is reminding hunters to act responsibly when the 2014 spring turkey hunt opens Friday.

Wild turkeys were reintroduced to Ontario in the late 1980s and the growth of turkey populations has allowed the hunt to expand as the number of birds continues to grow.

The association says conservation officers will be actively enforcing the law to ensure that the sport of turkey hunting continues to be safe.

Hunters must get permission to hunt on private land, and it's illegal in most of southern Ontario to hunt on or from public right of ways between tracts of private land.
