The minimum cost of damage after a crash that requires a police report is going up to $2,000 starting Tuesday.

The total amount of combined damage requiring drivers to report a crash to police has been $1,000 since 1998.

Now, in any crash where combined damage is estimated at less than $2,000 police don't need to become involved, and drivers must just exchange names, vehicle and insurance information, and work it out or go through their insurance companies.

Failure to exchange the required information could lead to charges.

The change does not affect collisions where an injury is involved, which must always be reported to police regardless of how minor the damage is.

It also does not apply if there is damage to other property like fences, posts, trees, etc., which again must be reported immediately even if damage is minor.

London police are reminding drivers that having proper documentation on hand at all times can make these types of situation much easier to manage.
