Administration at the Thames Valley District school board approved a staff recommendation to keep Lorne Avenue public school open for an extra year.

The decision was made due to delays in construction at the Bishop Townshend site.

Trustees decided at Tuesday's board meeting to keep Lorne Avenue school open until the end June 2016.

Other recommendations approved by the board staff included transferring students who live west of Adelaide Street to St. George's elementary school this September.

The remaining Lorne Avenue students would attend Bishop Townshend in September 2016.

There was also a recommendation that a daycare and adult ELS program be relocated this September.

Scott Maclean, of the Save Lorne Ave committee, thanked parents for submitting concerns to the board.

"This will significantly ease the transition for our students and families and will also allow the city to utilize the additional time provided to ensure that a suitable use is found for the Lorne Avenue site."
