People living in Huron and Perth counties who live below the poverty line received some support from the provincial government in an announcement made in Stratford Thursday morning.

Deputy Premier Deb Matthews explains, "It is a web-based system to plan the most effective poverty reduction initiatives in Perth and Huron counties."

The United Way of Huron-Perth estimated in a 2010 report that more than 14,000 people in their region were living below the poverty line.

And in that number, close to 4,000 were children.

In an announcement at the Stratford campus of the University of Waterloo, Matthews - as the minister responsible for poverty reduction - provided $300,000 in funding that will go toward a web-based reporting system that is designed to provide more timely and precise numbers to the social agencies dealing with those living in poverty.

The system will allow organizations to share data on poverty and reduction initiatives to help identify areas of greatest need and whether initiatives are working.
