Dozens of protesters gathered at wading pools Sunday to protest their closings.

The city shut down six wading pools in the city due to a lack of qualified lifeguards.

Parents and kids were out in full force at McMahen Park on Adelaide Street North.

Coun. Jesse Helmer is hoping the city can reduce hours at other pools to open the six wading pools with reduced hours.

"It's the first time I'm aware of us having a shortage like this. It became clear starting in March. The city has been working hard trying to fill those spots, and frankly, had they  not done a lot of the things they did, we'd be looking at closing pools."

While none of the indoor or outdoor pools have yet to be affected, the loss of the six wading pools, will have a large impact.

"It's devastating," one mother says.

The other wading pools closed are Byron, Murray, Smith and University Heights.
