OPP and city police forces across Canada will focus their efforts on the top four causes of crashes this Thanksgiving weekend.

Operation Impact will target distracted driving, speeding or aggressive driving, impaired driving and failing to wear a seatbelt this long weekend.

OPP Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair said in a statement, "Drivers and passengers must be mindful of the critical role they play in changing dangerous driving behaviours. The OPP knows that enforcement works and educating the public about safe driving practices is a priority."

Police say those so-called 'Big Four' were contributing factors in nearly 75 per cent of the 227 road deaths on OPP-patrolled roads so far this year, with speeding and distracted driving the most common factors.

In London, there have been 43 deaths over the last five years related to vehicle collisions.

In a statement, London police Sgt. Amanda Pfeffer said, "The deaths, pain and broken hearts that result from carelessness behind the wheel can be prevented..Police agencies across the country are collaborating on this project because they have seen more than enough of that."

Part of the goal of the campaign is educating the public on safe driving practices during a weekend when many are taking to the roads to visit loved ones.

Police services in St. Thomas, Woodstock and Stratford are also among the cities participating in the initiative.
