Academy Award winner Geena Davis will be the keynote speaker at the inaugural Brescia LEAD Awards in April.

Cathy Vitkauskas, vice-principal advancement at Brescia University College, said in a statement, “We are so pleased to have Geena Davis as our keynote speaker at the inaugural BresciaLEAD Awards...Not only is she an accomplished award-winning actress, she is also an effective activist and role model for our students and for women world-wide.”

Davis is best known for her roles in films like The Accidental Tourist, A League of Their Own, Tootsie, Thelma & Louise, Beetlejuice and The Fly, among others.

However, she is also an vocal women's advocate, and is currently the Special Engoy for Women and Girls in the field of technology for the United Nations.

The new national awards will honour exceptional female leaders and organizations across Canada.

Donna Rogers, interim principal, added, “Brescia has always taken great pride in educating and developing tomorrow’s women leaders. By establishing the BresciaLEAD Awards, we are able to present inspiring role models for our current students, while celebrating accomplished women leaders at a national level.”

Brescia, which is affiliated with Western University, is Canada's only women's university college with 1,550 full- and part-time students.
