London's Old East Village has been selected as a finalist in the Great Neighbourhoods category of the Great Places in Canada contest.

From 32 nominees, a total of 14 finalists have made it through the first round of voting in the 2014 edition.

Michael Gordon, president of the Canadian Institute of Planners, which hosts the contest, said in a statement, "It's such a pleasure to see Canadians get so involved in the celebration of their communities and really get behind them by nominating and voting for their favourite place."

Nearly 14,500 votes were received from Canadians across the country over the four-month contest period.

The other finalists in the category include:

  • Victoria Park in Kitchener, Ont.
  • Inglewood in Calgary, Alta.
  • Quartier Petit Champlain in Quebec City, Que.
  • St. Boniface in Winnipeg, Man.

The other categories in the competition are Great Public Spaces and Great Streets.

Six locations will take home prizes, either as People's Choice winners based on votes, or as the Grand Prize winners based on planning excellence and as determined by Canadian planners.

London's Wortley Village and Goderich's Courthouse Square picked up awards in the 2013 edition of the contest.

Winners for 2014 will be announced on Nov. 7.
