Travellers can now catch a non-stop flight from London and be in the Big Apple in just a few hours.

Beginning Oct. 26, London International Airport will be offering two United Airlines flights every day from the Forest City directly to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

Michael Seabrook, the London airport's president and CEO, says "You can get there in no time at all, you can get there for a ball game, get there for a play. For a weekend it's ideal, get away on a Friday be back on a Sunday and the business traveller can be out in the morning and back in the afternoon."

The flight time is just 90 minutes and Newark's airport is a 30 minute drive from Manhattan.

The flights will be operated by United's regional partner ExpressJet using 50-seat jets.

The carrier currently operates the daily flights from London to Chicago, which Seabrook says are very successful.

"They are averaging 75 to 80 per cent load factor, which is pretty good for a regional carrier. So we anticipate that New York is a destination that could be more popular than Chicago."

Research commissioned by the airport in 2013 showed that passenger wanted more direct flights from London to anywhere in the world.

Mayor Joni Baechler hopes the added flights will help put the city on the map for both business and tourism.

"When you open the door to be able to travel to New York to carry out business - and be home at the end of the day - I think it creates all kinds of opportunities for new business."
