TORONTO - A new commissioner has been named to lead the Ontario Provincial Police.

Vince Hawkes, who joined the force in 1984, will take over the top post from Commissioner Chris Lewis, who steps down on March 28 after a 35-year career.

Hawkes has served in a variety of senior positions, most recently as deputy commissioner of field operations where he's been responsible for services to more than 300 communities across the province.

He also served as provincial commander of investigations and organized crime, winning national recognition for his work on several committees on organized crime and leading the development of a national strategy.

When he takes over on March 29, he'll be the OPP's 14th commissioner.

Premier Kathleen Wynne congratulated Hawkes on the appointment Thursday, and thanked Lewis for helping to make the province "safer and stronger".
