The name of a woman who died in Elgin OPP custody has been released.

The Special Investigations Unit says Debra Chrisjohn, 39, of Oneida Nation of the Thames died after she went into medical distress.

The police watchdog has been called in to probe her death.

Elgin OPP say officers arrested the woman at about 7 p.m. on Wednesday on an outstanding warrant. Once in custody at the OPP detachment in St. Thomas, the woman went into medical distress. She was taken to hospital and was later pronounced dead.

No information has been released on a possible cause of death.

The SIU investigates all police interactions that involve death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
