The RCMP have charged two Quebec residents with drug offences following the seizure of 39 kilograms of suspected cocaine at the Blue Water Bridge.

They say the suspects were attempting to smuggle it into Canada last Wednesday in a commercial vehicle.

Officials say it is the second largest cocaine seizure at the Blue Water Bridge this year.

Guy Asselin, 50, and 38-year-old Julie Nault will appear in court Wednesday.

They are each charged with Importing a controlled substance into Canada and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

“Cocaine is one of the illegal drugs most commonly imported into Canada by organized crime groups. This illegal drug trade brings violence and other associated crimes into our communities and neighborhoods. The RCMP and CBSA continue to work together to keep illegal drugs out of our country and our communities," said RCMP Sgt. Deborah Murtha, of the Sarnia detachment.
