London Mayor Matt Brown unveiled a new online campaign Friday, 'London United for Refugees,' to help Syrian refugees settling in the Forest City.

The campaign is being spearheaded by the United Way London and Middlesex and the London Cross Cultural Learner Centre.

“As this situation began to unfold, it became very clear to us that demands placed on social services in our community would increase,” Andrew Lockie, CEO of the United Way London and Middlesex said in a statement.

“At the same time, donors have been calling looking for ways to help. London United for Refugees is a way to address this urgent need, over and above our annual fundraising Campaign.”

The goal is to "raise funds to address the urgent support needs of Syrian refugees who are beginning to arrive in our community," according to a statement from the mayor's office.

It can be an overwhelming transition for refugees as they begin their new life in Canada and funds raised will go toward front-line mental health supports, employment services and community inclusion programs.

Already this year, the United Way has committed to investing $283,500 in programs and services proven to be of the greatest help to newcomers.
