Two people were taken to hospital after a London police vehicle responding to a weapons call was involved in a collision.

According to London police, a cruiser was responding to a call in the Walmart parking lot at Fanshawe Park Road and Stanton Drive shortly before 8 a.m.

That’s when officials say it was involved in a collision with a blue SUV, in the area just east of Hyde Park Road.

The two occupants of the other vehicle - a woman and her 17-year-old daughter - were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The male officer involved was not injured.

The weapons call, which involved a report of a rifle in the parking lot and prompted a very brief lock down at the Walmart, turned out to be an air gun.

London police Sgt. Christine Weston explains "Basically we had a call out at the Walmart that there was a gentleman with a rifle in the parking lot, we responded, it turned out it was an airsoft gun that he had just purchased a scope for."

The male was not arrested by police, but was given a warning.

Speaking to CTV News, he said he felt horrible about the mistake and that he shouldn't have tried to attach the scope while he was in the parking lot.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

This is the second time in less than a week that a London police cruiser has been involved in a crash. On Sunday a cruiser was struck from behind sending both the officer and the other driver to hospital.
