Provincial police in Lambton County are alerting residents in St. Clair Township about the sighting of an approximately one-metre long lizard.

Officers were called to the 400 block of Beresford Street in Corunna on Thursday around 3 p.m. after the lizard was spotted in a residential backyard.

No one was able to capture the animal, and it is still believed to be roaming the area.

Police say even though current temperatures are warm and comfortable for people, the evening temperatures are not warm enough for this type of animal and it may seek warmth in places like the warm asphalt of roads and parking lots.

Staff at the Blue Water Centre for Raptor Rehabilitation (BCRR) say it is unlikely the lizard is a threat to animals or children, but it is best not to approach the animal and it should be dealth with by experienced handlers.

Anyone who sees the lizard is asked to contact police for assistance at 1-888-310-1122 or the BCRR at 519-466-2443 or 226-349-2443.
