A kitchen fire forced the evacuation of six floors at an apartment building on Ridout Street Friday night.

The fire department was called to 330 Ridout St. N. shortly after 5 p.m.

Officials say the fire was on the 21st floor of a 28-floor building.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke but managed to extinguise the fire quickly.

Multiple crews were required to clear the smoke from the apartment and from multiple floors of the building.

Residents from six other floors had to wait in the lobby until the smoke cleared. Residents living on the 21st floor were kept from their apartments until the fire investigation was complete.

The damage estimate is about $20,000.
