Friday is the final day for parents in Oxford County to ensure their children's immunization records are up to date.

About 400 students could be suspended if they don't receive the required vaccines or their records are not updated.

Joanne Andrews of Oxford County Public Health says, "Students who are still not compliant with the legislation will be suspended on February 19th."

Notices were sent to parents about outdated immunization records in December, but even with no time left there is still a way to avoid suspension.

Parents can provide proof of a pending appointment to get vaccinated in the near future and their child will be granted a grace period.

But the exemption is not a way out, Andrews says, "In that situation we do offer an extension for them as long as they have the appointment made, then we will be following up with them later."

The Immunization of School Pupils Act applies to children ages four to 17.

As of Sept. 2014, children are required to have proof of immunization against meningococcal disease, whooping cough and chickenpox (for those born in 2010 or later).

Other vaccinations required are diphtheria, polio, mumps and measles.

Parents can apply for a total exemption, and those who wish to do so should speak to a nurse at their local public health unit.
