The call for a green bin organic waste program in London got a boost Monday.

Jay Stanford, head of London's environmental services department, made a presentation about the program at city hall.

London is the largest city in the province not to have a green bin program.

The program would require households to sort food scraps into a separate container similar to how blue boxes remove recyclables from the garbage sent to the landfill.

A green bin program would cost $7.9 million in one-time setup costs, plus almost $4 million a year to operate.

London's new city council appears more receptive to the idea following Monday’s civic works committee.

A business case for green bins will be in front of council for multi-year budget talks later this spring.
