There was flooding, along with downed trees and power lines, across much of London on Wednesday evening after heavy rain fell in the city.

Reports of flooded streets, especially in low-lying areas, were coming in from across the city on social media.

Areas including Queens Avenue, Clarence Street and parts of Southdale Road - among many others - experienced some heavy flooding.

A number of roads had to be closed for cleanup, including Maitland Street between Oxford Street and Pall Mall Street after a tree toppled onto hydro wires.

Power outages were also reported in a number of neighbourhoods.

Earlier, Environment Canada had issued a thunderstorm watch and a special weather statement for London and surrounding areas, calling for storms that could produce strong winds and heavy rain, with up to 40 millimetres of rain falling, more in some localized areas.

Emergency officials are warning people to stay away from waterways now and for the next few days as high and fast-moving water could pose a danger, especially to children.
