Mosquitoes found in a trap in the Westminster Ponds area of south London have tested positive for the West Nile virus.

This is the first report of mosquitoes in the area testing positive for the disease this summer.

“For several weeks we’ve known that West Nile Virus is present in London and Middlesex County, so these findings are an important reminder that although summer is winding down, we still need to take steps to protect ourselves from mosquito bites,” Jeremy Hogeveen, vector-borne disease coordinator with the health unit, said in a statement.

The positive result in mosquitoes from the trap near Wellington and Southdale roads was reported to the Middlesex-London Health Unit on Friday.

The virus had already been reported in two dead crows, but the health unit says they have also learned two additional dead crows have tested  positive.

Those crows were found in the Dundas and Hale street area in east London and the Oxford Street and Hyde Park Road area in the city's west end.

Hogeveen added that it's an important reminder that people should be "removing standing water from areas like eavestroughs, flower pots and other objects around the yard, and taking steps to discourage bites like wearing light-coloured clothing and using a bug repellant that contains DEET.”
