Owen Sound police say residents of an apartment complex at 825 9th Street West were forced from their homes due to an electrical fire.

Police, EMS and fire crews responded to the Victoria Towers around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday and found dense smoke in the second floor hallway.

Firefighters were able to quickly find the source of the fire, then contain and extinguish it. Police say it appears to have started in a second floor electrical box. Foul play is not suspected.

Due to the heavy smoke and concern that the fire could spread, the residents of the complex were escorted from the building.

Police say many elderly residents with mobility issues were safely moved thanks to EMS, and no smoke inhalation or injuries are reported as a direct result of the fire.

Ontario Hydro was called in and power was disconnected from the building. It is not expected to be restored until the system can be inspected and repaired.

Residents unable to stay with family or friends had accommodation at a local motel arranged by building management and were transported there by bus. Victims' Services also responded and provided assistance.

It remains unclear when residents will be able to return home.
