The federal government is contributing $24 million to drug abuse treatment initiatives under a two-year program announced Wednesday in London.

The funding will be distributed to 14 provincial and territorial providers across the country and will help individuals living with drug addictions and their families through the treatment and recovery process.

"Substance abuse can tear familes apart, ruin friendships and relationships," says Pamela Hill of Addiction Services of Thames Valley, where the announcement was made.

The program’s aim is to improve substance abuse treatment across Canada.

The government's anti-drug strategy focusses on preventing illicit drug use and prescription drug abuse, treating drug dependency and combating the production and distribution of illicit drugs

Samantha Scott, a recovering addict is thankful for the help.

"In my chest I used to feel that there was a feeling of doom and unhappiness and a lot of resentment. But through addiction services and dealing with the problems that I had, it’s gone, it's gone.  And for the first time ever I can actually feel like my shoulders are higher. I'm lifted up and I'm really happy again and it's wonderful."
