One person has died after a collision involving a vehicle and a VIA Rail train in the Melbourne area, southwest of London.

The crash happened at a level crossing on Melbourne Road, south of Glendon Drive around 2:55 p.m. on Friday.

Police say a car was southbound on Melbourne Road when it was struck by a westbound train.

The female driver of the car was was ejected and died at the scene. Officials say there were no passengers in the vehicle.

The VIA Rail passenger train bound for Windsor was carrying 155 people, but no one on board was injured.

Middlesex OPP are investigating the crash and Melbourne Road from Glendon Drive to Parkhouse Drive is expected to be closed for some time.

Debris from the crash was scattered along the tracks, and the car came to rest in a ditch about 60 metres from the crash scene.

The crossing is controlled by flashing lights, and the signals on the north side of the crossing were damaged in the crash.

The train was able to resume travel to its destination by early Friday evening.
