A driver has been charged after plowing into a barricade and nearly hitting a Huron County OPP officer who was directing traffic.

The incident happened shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday at Huron Road and Benmiller Line, where the officer was directing traffic away from a nearby fatal head-on crash.

The officer was outside his cruiser when the driver of a westbound Buick Lucerne slammed into a temporary wooden road barricade on Huron Road.

Fortunately, the officer was able to move out of the way moments before the vehicle collided with the barrier.

The male driver and his passenger were uninjured. The road sign was completely destroyed while the Buick Lucerne sustained moderate damage.

Police have charged 91-year-old Campbell Wey from Huron East with careless driving.
