Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird says diplomatic efforts to get two Canadians jailed in Egypt released are not going as hoped.

Toronto filmmaker John Greyson and London, Ontario doctor Tarek Loubani were arrested seven weeks ago during a bloody protest in Cairo.

They've been held without charge ever since, and on Sunday they were ordered detained for at least another 45 days.

The two have been hunger striking to protest their imprisonment and degrading treatment which they say has included beatings.

On the day of their arrest the two say they witnessed the brutal killings of more than 50 people as security forces battled protesters.

They say Greyson filmed some of the carnage and also Dr. Loubani aiding a wounded protester.

Egyptian prosecutors have accused the Canadians of "participating with members of the Muslim Brotherhood" in an attack on a police station -- which the two categorically deny.

The Harper government has repeatedly demanded that in the absence of charges the two be released immediately -- however the demand has been ignored.
