Ontario has spent billions of dollars 'dumping' excess electricity on other jurisdictions.

Now, a midwestern Ontario company thinks it has the answer to that problem.

NRStor Incorporated opened the first grid-connected energy storage facility in Ontario on Tuesday.

The company can store up to two Megawatts of electricity through the use of 10 underground flywheels.

They believe it will help save electricity from intermittent suppliers like wind turbines for re-use when consumers need it.

The flywheels can take power off or add power to the grid at a moment’s notice, where it can take several minutes or hours to ramp up or down other electrical suppliers like nuclear, hydro and natural gas.

There’s an anticipation that more 'quick response' energy storage facilities will soon be opening across the province.

NRStor expects there to be demand for their technology around North America as more renewable energy comes on the grid.
