A contentious public meeting on Monday night involved new rules for licensing of methadone clinics.

Critics felt requiring exterior security cameras would prevent people from seeking treatment.

If approved by council, London will be among the first municipalities in Canada to license methadone clinics.

A license would cost $700 and put rules in place for operating a clinic that include keeping a daily count of patients, four inspections a year by city staff and allowing exterior security cameras.

Despite that plea the Community and Protective Services Committee voted in favour of recommending the new licensing rules, though a lot more debate is expected over security cameras and privacy when the issue goes for final approval from council in two weeks.
